Q: : If you are not prepared to update your blog frequently at this time, is it better to add to it only occasionally or should you simply participate more frequently on the blogs of others?
A: Hi Diana! A blog is like a garden — it needs to be tended and watered often to bloom (be effective). Because it’s very easy to update blogs regularly with new posts, they’re a ready made attraction device for search engines, as search engine spiders are always looking for new content to index. If you’re not posting regularly to your blog, you lose that competitive advantage, and your blog is no more attractive to a search engine than a traditional website. So, if you’ve gone to all the trouble to create a blog, make it an integral part of your marketing efforts. Post portions of your email newsletter as blog entries. Ask your visitors for questions you can answer (just like I’m doing here). Write about a recent problem you or a client has resolved. Review a book or a new product. Chronicle your visit to a professional conference. If you give it some thought, there’s an endless supply of material that will serve as fodder for your blog.
If you have time to participate on other people’s blogs, you’ve got time to blog on your own blog..:). Commenting on other blogs is a good supportive marketing strategy, but the most effective strategy is putting your time and energy into your own blog.
